KEXP is traveling to Mexico City for the first time from February 26 to March 1 to record some of the best acts in the Aztec country’s current scene. The station is teaming up with Panoram Studios and the NRMAL Festival – which celebrates its first decade of existence this year – to air and live stream performances from bands, some of which who are also playing NRMAL. Among the 16 acts playing our broadcast is Centavrvs on Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. PST/5 p.m. CST.
Centavrvs in one of the most popular indie bands in Mexico City. They come from three other bands and have played together since 2011. The name was chosen for its cultural symbolism: it is the nickname of Pancho Villa, "El Centauro del Norte"; the Alpha Centauri constellation and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution. They have defined their music as "Regional Mexican Electronics".
KEXP reached out to Centavrvs to get their take on Mexico's music scene and the Latin music they're loving right now.
KEXP: Mexico City is one of the most eclectic musical epicenters in the world. What do you think about the current independent music scene in your country?
Centavrvs: In Mexico, we have too many flavors. Nowadays there is a lot of musical offerings and there are not enough platforms for each project to find its audience. Sometimes, it is difficult for a certain type of scene to understand the importance of working as a team to create an independent cultural ecosystem. For the electronic scene, for example, the theme of creating community is implicit.
The remix culture helps that, the idea of making parties, contracting between the members of the same scene so that this is reciprocal and that there is more activity for everyone. In other scenes, this is complicated by the costs of moving a band, rent equipment, etc. Today there are genres that are having a better time than others. The beautiful thing is to see what the creators manage to do with or without support. But without doubt, we have very interesting stamps and very innovative characters. Mexico is at the forefront.
Latin American music and music in Spanish is being featured all over the world with strong messages. What do you think there is in today’s music that is captivating without geographical limits?
Latin music has fire; the interpretation of the rhythm in Latin America is a bomb. In the industry there are all kinds of interests, mostly economic, it does not matter if it is Chinese or Colombian while selling millions. Reggaeton has given guidelines to Spanish-speaking music to position artists who have been able to take advantage of this flow and talk about necessary topics, the sexual charisma of rhythms like this is undoubted, but the interesting thing is to see these representatives making intelligent use of their art to contribute to human welfare. Resident is there from a more political trench, or Bomba Estéreo and Balvin from a more humanistic position and to spread love. The Latin aesthetic has always had an impact on the mass entertainment industries, it is a natural charisma.

KEXP viajará por primera vez al centro musical latinoamericano de Ciudad de México para registrar lo mejor de la escena actual de este país azteca del 26 al 1 de marzo. Algunas de estas bandas forman parte del line up de Nrmal, el festival local que este año cumplirá su primera década y nosotros, lo celebraremos con esta alianza musical junto a ellos y a Panoram Studios.
Este viaje contará con presentaciones en vivo transmitidas online y al aire por la 90.3 FM en Seattle y transmisiones audiovisuales en vivo por el canal de YouTube de KEXP. Se presentarán un total de 15 bandas en vivo, incluyendo a Centavrvs quien nos comparte su mensaje y punto de vista sobre la actual escena musical mexicana.
Centavrvs en una de las bandas indie más populares de la Ciudad de México. Provienen de otras tres bandas y tocan desde 2011. Su nombre fue elegido por su simbolismo cultural: es el apodo de Pancho Villa, "El Centauro del Norte"; la constelación Alfa Centauri y el centenario de la Revolución Mexicana. Han definido su música como "Electrónica Regional Mexicana".
KEXP: Ciudad de México es uno de los epicentros musicales más eclécticos del mundo. ¿Qué opinan sobre la actual escena musical independiente de su país?
Centavrvs: En México tenemos demasiados sabores. Hoy en día hay muchísima oferta musical y no hay suficientes plataformas para que cada proyecto pueda encontrar a su público. A veces, es difícil que cierto tipo de escena pueda entender lo importante de trabajar en equipo para crear un ecosistema cultural independiente. Para la escena electrónica, por ejemplo, está implícito el tema de crear comunidad.
La cultura del Remix ayuda eso, la idea de hacer fiestas, contratarse entre los miembros de la misma escena para que esto sea recíproco y que exista más actividad para todos. En otras escenas esto se complica bastante por los costos de mover una banda por ejemplo, rentar equipo etc. Hoy en día hay generos que estan viviendo un mejor momento que otros. Lo bello es ver lo que logran hacer los creadores con o sin apoyo. Pero sin duda tenemos sellos muy interesantes y personajes muy innovadores. México está a la vanguardia.
La música en español, la latinoamericana, está teniendo exponentes en todo el mundo con mensajes contundentes. Que creen que hay en esta música, hoy, que está cautivando sin límites geográficos?
Lo latino tiene fuego, la interpretación de el ritmo en latinoamérica es una bomba. En la industria hay todo tipo de intereses, la mayoría económicos, no importa si es chino o colombiano mientras venda millones. El reggaeton ha dado pauta a la música en habla hispana para posicionar artistas que han sabido aprovechar este flow y hablar de temas necesarios, es indudable el carisma sexual de ritmos como este, pero lo interesante es ver a estos representantes haciendo un uso inteligente de su arte para contribuir al bienestar humano. Ahí está Residente desde una trinchera más política, o Bomba Estéreo y Balvin desde una posición más humanista y de propagar amor. La estética latina siempre ha tenido impacto en las industrias de entretenimiento masivo, es un carisma natural.
