Portland-by-way-of New Zealand psych-rock outfit Unknown Mortal Orchestra have announced they are dropping an instrumental album next month called IC-01 Hanoi. Partially recorded at Phu Sa Studios in Hanoi, Vietnam, the album features local musician Minh Nguyen on Sáo Trúc, Đàn Môi, and Vietnamese percussion, as well as band members Ruban and Kody Nielson’s father Chris on flugelhorn, saxophone, and keyboards.
IC-01 Hanoi is described as “a sonic distillation of the band’s influences in Jazz, Krautrock, and the avant-garde,” and was deeply inspired by the experimental works of Miles Davis, specifically 1972’s On the Corner. The band has shared the first single, “Hanoi 6," a ten-minute freeform jazz song that’s unlike anything UMO has done before. IC-01 Hanoi is out Oct. 26 via Jagjaguwar. Earlier this year, the Ruban Nielson-led band released their fourth studio album, Sex & Food.
