Here in Seattle, the air is getting crisp and leaves are turning burnt orange but in sunny Los Angeles there’s really only one season: summer. That could be why indie pop trio Tangerine made the move to the City of Angels last year and in their new video for “Cherry Red” they make a strong argument for why we should all join them. The trio – made up of sisters Marika & Miro Justad and Tobias Kuhn – have always made music that felt a bit too sunny for the near-constant gloom of Seattle and on the new single they are absolutely sun-drenched. Bookended with lead singer Marika looking out on the shimmering aquamarine waves of a California beach, the video encapsulates the youthful lyrics of the song which reminisce about girlhood nostalgia and teenage antics.
“The opening lines – ‘we used to wait for the info, in your car drinking bright dayglo’ are about driving around North Seattle in my friend Annie's red Ford Echo in early high school,” Marika explains. “The band all recently watched Lost Boys, the 1980s vampire movie set in a small California seaside town, and the aesthetics of that really spoke to us so we drew on that a little bit as well. For the video, we decided to create an abandoned-beach-town-during-the-off-season vibe, so we spent a weekend at a mostly empty hotel in Redondo Beach. We directed the video ourselves and took turns shooting it on Miro's iPhone8 with help from her boyfriend Richie Owen.”
"Cherry Red” comes from Tangerine’s forthcoming EP White Dove, out this Friday, October 19 via AWAL and follows the album’s first dream pop single “Local Mall.” The EP was produced by Sanj & Luca Buccellati (Tei Shi) and is described as “sad enough to dance alone to, but bumps hard enough for your next crazy night out.”
