March 8th is International Women's Day, a day to "celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women because visibility and awareness help drive positive change for women." To celebrate, today, KEXP is only playing music by women, with a packed schedule of special on-air guests and exclusive mixes. We're also spotlighting some iconic women here on the KEXP Blog -- obviously, it'd be impossible to list every amazing female artist in one post, but scroll down for just a few of these inspirations.

"We all require and want respect, man or woman,
black or white. It's our basic human right."

--Aretha Franklin

"As far as I'm concerned, being any gender is a drag."
--Patti Smith

"I follow my instinct and if that supports young girls in any way, great. But I'd rather they saw it more as a lesson about following their own instincts rather than imitating somebody."
--Björk

"It's funny, because for females in general -- not just in music, but the corporate ladder as well -- anything we do has always been harder for us. When it comes to music, the industry wants you to conform, to look like this, and to sound like this, and do this or that. It makes it harder. It's harder for us to come out and be bosses and lead the pack."
--Missy Elliott

"I was the first woman to burn my bra -– it took the fire department four days to put it out."
--Dolly Parton

"I’m sad that my desire to be treated as an equal and as a human being is interpreted as hatred of men, rather than a request to be included and respected."
--Grimes

"Women make natural anarchists and revolutionaries because they've always been second-class citizens, kinda having had to claw their way up. I mean, who made up all the rules in the culture? Men - white male corporate society. So why wouldn't a woman want to rebel against that?"
--Kim Gordon

"People forget the punk thing was really good for women. It motivated them to pick up a guitar rather than be a chanteuse. It allowed us to be aggressive."
--Siouxsie Sioux

"The whole world is starting to realize that it was the most unwise thing for our society to have ignored women power, to run the society with male priorities."
--Yoko Ono
