I haven’t watched last night’s episode of Game of Thrones yet so I write this news carefully and tentatively. Apparently, at the end of last night’s episode Florence and the Machine debuted a studio version of a song sung earlier in the episode, “Jenny of Oldstones,” during the closing credits. Written by score composer Ramin Djawadi alongside showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as well as George R.R. Martin himself, the song is a haunting Celtic ballad.

“When I first heard the song it sounded like a Celtic lullaby to me,” Florence Welch said in the statement. “Celtic music has always been in my blood, so I felt like I could do something with it. The magic and ritual in Game of Thrones, not to mention the costumes, have always appealed to me. I am honoured to be a part of the final season.”

The song initially appears in a fireside scene and is sung a cappella by Podrick Payne (Daniel Portman). Florence and the Machine is the only band that will make an appearance for Game of Thrones' final season.

"We’ve always been huge fans of Florence’s music, and the Season 2 trailer with her song ‘Seven Devils’ was possibly the most powerful we’ve ever had," says Benioff and Weiss. "So the opportunity to hear her otherworldly voice on our show was always at the forefront of our minds. We’re still pleasantly shocked that she agreed to sing ‘Jenny of Oldstones,’ and we’re in love with the result."

Game of Thrones is in its final season, with only four total episodes. Listen to “Jenny of Oldstones” and watch Florence and the Machine’s 2010 KEXP in-studio performance below.
