This Friday, Chicago rapper Open Mike Eagle and comedian Baron Vaughn will debut their new Comedy Central variety show The New Negroes. Inspired by Alain Locke’s book of “essays, poetry, fiction, and music from a generation of emerging artists credited with launching the Harlem Renaissance,” the weekly show will feature stand-up sets as well as a new original song and music video by OME and a different musical guest.
Ahead of the premiere, Open Mike Eagle has shared his first song/video for the series, “Unfiltered,” which features Detroit rapper Danny Brown. Taking place in an office of incredibly rude people, OME lets his inner thoughts come out via Brown, which is not received well.
Future musical guests on The New Negroes will include Lizzo, MF Doom, Method Man, and more. Comedians Hannibal Buress and Sasheer Zamata are also expected to appear. The show airs this Friday, April 19 on Comedy Central with a simulcast on BET.
Open Mike Eagle dropped the EP What Happens When I Try to Relax last year while Danny Brown released Atrocity Exhibition back in 2016.
