Welcome to Review Revue, where every Thursday I dig through the KEXP stacks to share DJ reviews and comments written on the covers of LPs (and occasionally CDs) in the ’80s and ’90s, when the station was called KCMU, the DJs were volunteers, and people shared their opinions on little white labels instead of the internet.
We don't have a whole lot to go on for this week's installment — a band with very little information about them online, and only a couple handwritten notes on the album cover — but I caught the whiff of gossip and scandal, and I could not look away. Animal Kingdom, as I mentioned, is hard to find information about - perhaps especially because the band name is a relatively common phrase, the album is self-titled, and there's another, more current band by the same name using up all the Internet's "animal kingdom band" attention. But I was able to tease out one bit of personnel information out there in HTML-land, which is that one member of Animal Kingdom was Fiia McGann, of Goodness and several other bands over the past couple-few decades. We'll just assume Ms. McGann was not one of the people referred to in the second comment below.
"Baby Baby rocks too! [I don't know why there is a "too" here. Perhaps there's a missing comment?] They're real nice people too. We should play this much more often!"
"They are NOT nice people! I lived under their motherfucking apartment! I should know! I DO know!"
