Lizzo has been showing all her sides in the singles leading up to her new album Cuz I Love You. Lead single “Juice” is a certified pop banger, “Cuz I Love You” is a soulful ballad that would make Etta James cry, and now we’ve got the dirty hip hop jam featuring an icon – “Tempo.” With none other than the Grammy-winning icon Missy Elliott teaming up with the Minneapolis artist, “Tempo” is a club jam for the thick girls.
“Slow songs they for skinny hoes/ Can’t move all of this here to one of those/ I’m a thick bitch I need tempo,” sings the always-body-positive artist. Elliott comes in with “Kitty cat, kitty cat, prrr/ All the thick girls down on the flrrr/ Ice on my neck like brrr/ I'm big-boned with nice curves/ Look at me, I know I look grrrd," making it the ultimate celebration of bigger bodies. With the release of the Hulu series Shrill, based on the book by The Stranger writer Lindy West, it looks like 2019 could be the year body positivity truly breaks through.
Cuz I Love You follows 2016’s Coconut Oil EP and is out April 19. Lizzo will make a couple of stops in Seattle in the next few months, first on Sunday, April 28 at the Showbox and again for Capitol Hill Block Party, taking place Friday, July 19 through Sunday, July 30.
