Natalie Mering is gearing up to release her fourth album as Weyes Blood on April 5. Titled Titanic Rising, the record is her first for Sub Pop and follows 2016’s Front Row Seat to Earth. Today, she’s shared the third single off the album, “Movies.” The dramatic song opens with a flurry of synth arpeggios and builds to aptly cinematic heights. Mering says this of the song:
"Our generation is the most cinematically saturated of all time. Videotapes, DVD’s, streaming … Spielberg … all of it has thrust us into an endless loop of consumption … I wanted to take a look into the emotionally manipulative powers of Movies—how have Movies succeeded in telling the myths of our time? How have they failed (miserably)? What is the consequent effect on a society of beings looking for themselves in the myths on the screen? It’s safe to say that they have failed us, but I can’t help it … I love Movies."
The song comes with a self-directed video that sees blonde-wigged Mering float underwater while a movie-watching audience looks on before jumping into the film. Weyes Blood will play the Tractor Tavern on Thursday, May 16.
