KEXP Live From Mexico Preview: Sonido Gallo Negro

KEXP is traveling to Mexico City for the first time from February 26 to March 1 to record some of the best acts in the Aztec country’s current scene. The station is teaming up with Panoram Studios and the NRMAL Festival – which celebrates its first decade of existence this year – to air and live stream performances from bands, some of which who are also playing NRMAL. Among the 16 acts playing our broadcast is Sonido Gallo Negro on Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m. PST/7:30 p.m. CST.

Sonido Gallo Negro (English translation: Black Rooster Sound) is a large combo from east Mexico City's Aragon section. They channel both the mystique and mysticism of 1960s Peruvian cumbia while integrating huayno, sonidero, boogaloo, and chicha with electric guitars, Farfisa organ, Theremin, flute, and of course, varied, driving Latin percussion. Neo-psychedelia (a big part of the original Peruvian scene), spaghetti western soundtracks, and surf music are also core elements. Sonido Gallo Negro drenches their music with song titles with images from science fiction, voodoo, acid visions, modern tribalism, and folklore. All sounds are geared toward whipping up dancers.

KEXP reached out to Sonido Gallo Negro to get their take on Mexico's music scene and the Latin music they're loving right now.

KEXP: Mexico City is one of the most eclectic musical epicenters in the world. What do you think about the current independent music scene in your country?

Sonido Gallo Negro: The current scene has many more bands and artists than 10 or 15 years ago who are playing. The quality is very good but spaces are needed to vent all these proposals. We need forums, radio, record companies (independent) and bookers that trust these new proposals and treat them with dignity. The artists already took the first step to leave behind the old skin of rock in Mexico, but it is necessary that the other media give it.

KEXP: Latin American music and music in Spanish is being featured all over the world with strong messages. What do you think there is in today’s music that is captivating without geographical limits?

Latin musicians are having access to the same tools and knowledge of production and recording that they have in the first world. The musical world is homogenizing. Before all this came to Latin America with considerable latency, the world also lives in an era where there is less stigma for listening to mestizo music.

KEXP viajará por primera vez al centro musical latinoamericano de Ciudad de México para registrar lo mejor de la escena actual de este país azteca del 26 al 1 de marzo. Algunas de estas bandas forman parte del line up de Nrmal, el festival local que este año cumplirá su primera década y nosotros, lo celebraremos con esta alianza musical junto a ellos y a Panoram Studios. 

Este viaje contará con presentaciones en vivo transmitidas online y al aire por la 90.3 FM en Seattle y transmisiones audiovisuales en vivo por el canal de YouTube de KEXP. Se presentarán un total de 15 bandas en vivo, incluyendo a Sonido Gallo Negro quien nos comparte su mensaje y punto de vista sobre la actual escena musical mexicana.

Sonido Gallo Negro (en inglés: Black Rooster Sound) es un gran combo de la sección Aragón del este de la Ciudad de México. Canalizan tanto la mística como el misticismo de la cumbia peruana de la década de 1960, al tiempo que integran huayno, sonidero, boogaloo y chicha con guitarras eléctricas, órgano de Farfisa, Theremin, flauta y, por supuesto, variadas conduciendo la percusión latina. La neo-psicodelia (una gran parte de la escena peruana original), las bandas sonoras de spaghetti western y la música de surf también son elementos centrales. Sonido Gallo Negro empapa su música con títulos de canciones con imágenes de ciencia ficción, vudú, visiones ácidas, tribalismo moderno y folklore. . Todos los sonidos están orientados hacia los bailarines.

KEXP: Ciudad de México es uno de los epicentros musicales más eclécticos del mundo. ¿Qué opinan sobre la actual escena musical independiente de su país?

Sonido Gallo Negro: La escena actual tiene muchísimas más bandas y artistas que hace 10 o 15 años atrás que están tocando. La calidad es muy buena pero hacen falta espacios para desahogar todas estas propuestas. Hacen falta foros, radio, disqueras (independientes) y bookers que confíen en estas nuevas propuestas y que las traten dignamente. Los artistas ya dieron el primer paso para dejar atrás la piel vieja del rock en México, pero hace falta que los demás medios lo den.

La música en español, la latinoamericana, está teniendo exponentes en todo el mundo con mensajes contundentes. ¿Que creen que hay en esta música, hoy, que está cautivando sin límites geográficos?

Los músicos Latinos estamos teniendo accesos a las mismas herramientas y conocimiento de producción y grabación que tienen en el 1er Mundo. El mundo musical se está homogeneizando. Antes todo esto llegaba a Latinoamérica con una considerable latencia, también el mundo vive una época donde hay un menor estigma por escuchar música mestiza.
