KEXP is traveling to Mexico City for the first time from February 26 to March 1 to record some of the best acts in the Aztec country’s current scene. The station is teaming up with Panoram Studios and the NRMAL Festival – which celebrates its first decade of existence this year – to air and live stream performances from bands, some of which who are also playing NRMAL. Among the 16 acts playing our broadcast is Quiero Club on Feb. 27 at 12 p.m. PST/2 p.m. CST.
After taking the musical scene by surprise in 2004, today Quiero Club is a trio formed by Priscila González, Luis Fara, and Boscop Benavente. They have played on one of the most important festivals and forums in the Mexican Republic, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, and Spain. After the release of the LP Oportunidad de Oro in June 2018, Quiero Club continues its journey as one of the most representative and innovative bands within Latin American independent music. To speak of its sound is to refer to danceable electronic music, contagious melodies, memorable phrases and a mixture of rhythms; to Pop.
KEXP: Mexico City is one of the most eclectic musical epicenters in the world. What do you think about the current independent music scene in your country?
Quiero Club: Without a doubt, we are a very musical country. Talking about a single scene is impossible since there are too many groups of bands with very defined genres. New things constantly arise that by nature have the mission to explore and always propose something new. I see it as lava from a living volcano. On the other hand, nowadays the industry continues and will continue to change and I believe that independent artists are always surfing these waves of changes in this digital age.
Latin American music and music in Spanish is being featured all over the world with strong messages. What do you think there is in today’s music that is captivating without geographical limits?
Today, the way a song can reach listeners around the world is latent and yes, there are many of us who are making music in Spanish. The global trend is favoring us as well as at the time the music in English reached all corners. It becomes a virtuous circle because many of the current composers were very influenced by English music.
KEXP: What three Latin bands would you recommend our listeners and readers check out?
KEXP viajará por primera vez al centro musical latinoamericano de Ciudad de México para registrar lo mejor de la escena actual de este país azteca del 26 al 1 de marzo. Algunas de estas bandas forman parte del line up de Nrmal, el festival local que este año cumplirá su primera década y nosotros, lo celebraremos con esta alianza musical junto a ellos y a Panoram Studios.
Este viaje contará con presentaciones en vivo transmitidas al aire a 90.3 FM en Seattle y transmisiones audiovisuales en vivo por el canal de YouTube de KEXP. Se presentarán un total de 15 bandas en vivo, incluyendo a Quiero Club quien nos comparte su mensaje y punto de vista sobre la actual escena musical mexicana.

KEXP: Ciudad de México es uno de los epicentros musicales más eclécticos del mundo. ¿Qué opinan sobre la actual escena musical independiente de su país?
Quiero Club: Sin dudas somos un país muy musical. Hablar de una sola escena es imposible ya que existen demasiados grupos de bandas con géneros muy definidos. Constantemente surgen cosas nuevas que por naturaleza tienen la misión de explorar y proponer siempre algo nuevo. Lo veo como lava de un volcán vivo. Por otro lado, hoy en día la industria sigue y seguirá cambiando y creo que en sí los artistas independientes siempre estamos surfeando estas olas de cambios en esta era digital.
La música en español, la latinoamericana, está teniendo exponentes en todo el mundo con mensajes contundentes. Que creen que hay en esta música, hoy, que está cautivando sin límites geográficos.
Hoy en día, la forma en que una canción puede llegar a escuchas en todo el mundo es latente y sí, somos muchos los que estamos haciendo música en español. La tendencia global nos está favoreciendo así como en su momento la música en inglés llegaba a todos los rincones. Se vuelve un círculo virtuoso pues a muchos de los compositores actuales nos influenció mucho la música en inglés.
