Big Thief have announced they’ll be releasing their third studio album and first for 4AD on May 3. Titled U.F.O.F., the record follows 2017’s Capacity and was recorded here in Washington at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville. Dom Monks manned the engineering on the album while the band teamed up with previous collaborator Andrew Sarlo for production. As a first taste of the album, the Brooklyn-bred band has shared the album’s title track which floats like the UFO referenced in the song, hovering above just out of sight.
“Making friends with the unknown.... All my songs are about this,” lead vocalist Adrianne Lenker said in a statement. “If the nature of life is change and impermanence, I’d rather be uncomfortable awake in that truth than lost in denial.”
Big Thief will embark on a lengthy tour behind U.F.O.F., with a date in Seattle on Saturday, October 26 at the Moore Theatre. For their North American stops, the band is partnering with Plus1 to donate $1 from each U.S. ticket sold to SAEF, Little Kids Rock and Youth Speaks, while the same portion of Canadian ticket sales will benefit DANS LA RUE, Sketch and UNYA.
Last year, Big Thief put out a 30-minute sound collage called Wide Winged Bird while Lenker released her second solo full-length, Abysskiss, and guitarist Buck Meek unveiled his debut self-titled record. Listen to “UFOF” and watch Big Thief’s KEXP in-studio performance from 2017 below.
