KEXP Live From Mexico Preview: Little Jesus

KEXP is traveling to Mexico City for the first time from February 26 to March 1 to record some of the best acts in the Aztec country’s current scene. The station is teaming up with Panoram Studios and the NRMAL Festival – which celebrates its first decade of existence this year – to air and live stream performances from bands, some of which who are also playing NRMAL. Among the 16 acts playing our broadcast is Little Jesus on Feb. 27. 

Little Jesus is a quintet born in Mexico City. They are based on the tradition of Mexican rock related to projects such as Cafe Tacvba and Phobia while adding different sonic textures produced by synthesizers and exaggerated effects. They have been compared to the Beach Boys, Foals and Vampire Weekend. Little Jesus have played major festivals in the USA and even opened for the Rolling Stones when they were in Mexico City. In January of 2019, they released their new single "Los Años Maravillosos".

KEXP reached out to Little Jesus to get their take on Mexico's music scene and the Latin music they're loving right now. 

KEXP: Mexico City is one of the most eclectic musical epicenters in the world. What do you think about the current independent music scene in your country?

We emerged in 2013. We were very lucky because that year there were many projects that have been very important for CDMX to become a very attractive place due to its musical diversity and opportunities for musicians and artists of all types and from all over the world. Recently we have seen how that move has been expanding to other cities in the country. Today it is possible to tour in many cities, something that 10 years ago seemed impossible. Each city has its own scene and the number of projects that are about to emerge thanks to this opening, we are very excited.

Latin American music and music in Spanish is being featured all over the world with strong messages. What do you think there is in today’s music that is captivating without geographical limits?

I think it has to do with the rhythm that we carry in our blood, our good vibes, and that we invite everyone to our party no matter where they’re from.

KEXP viajará por primera vez al centro musical latinoamericano de Ciudad de México para registrar lo mejor de la escena actual de este país azteca del 26 al 1 de marzo. Algunas de estas bandas forman parte del line up de Nrmal, el festival local que este año cumplirá su primera década y nosotros, lo celebraremos con esta alianza musical junto a ellos y a Panoram Studios. 

Este viaje contará con presentaciones en vivo transmitidas al aire a 90.3 FM en Seattle y transmisiones audiovisuales en vivo por el canal de YouTube de KEXP. Se presentarán un total de 15 bandas en vivo, incluyendo a Little Jesus quien nos comparte su mensaje y punto de vista sobre la actual escena musical mexicana.

Little Jesus es un quinteto que nace en la Ciudad de México. Se basan en la tradición del rock mexicano emparentados a proyectos como Café Tacvba y Fobia, mientras que agregan distintas texturas sónicas producidas por sintetizadores y efectos exagerados. Se han comparado con los Beach Boys, Foals y Vampire Weekend. Little Jesus ha tocado en importantes festivales de los EE. UU. y abrió para los Rolling Stones cuando estuvieron en la CDMX. En enero de 2019 lanzaron su nuevo sencillo "Los años Maravillosos".

KEXP: Ciudad de México es uno de los epicentros musicales más eclécticos del mundo. ¿Qué opinan sobre la actual escena musical independiente de su país?

Little Jesus: Nosotros surgimos en el 2013. Tuvimos mucha suerte porque ese año surgieron muchos proyectos que han sido muy importantes para que la CDMX se vuelva un lugar muy atractivo por su diversidad musical y las oportunidades para músicos y artistas de todo tipo y de todo el mundo. Recientemente hemos visto cómo esa movida se ha ido expandiendo hacia otras ciudades del país. Hoy es posible hacer giras en muchísimas ciudades, algo que hace 10 años parecía imposible. Cada ciudad tiene su propia escena y la cantidad de proyectos que están por surgir gracias a esta apertura, nos emociona mucho. 

La música en español, la latinoamericana, está teniendo exponentes en todo el mundo con mensajes contundentes. Que creen que hay en esta música, hoy, que está cautivando sin límites geográficos?

Creo que tiene que ver con el ritmo que llevamos en la sangre y que somos muy buena onda e invitamos a todos a nuestra fiesta sin importar de dónde es cada quién.
