KEXP is traveling to Mexico City for the first time from February 26 to March 1 to record some of the best acts in the Aztec country’s current scene. The station is teaming up with Panoram Studios and the NRMAL Festival – which celebrates its first decade of existence this year – to air and live stream performances from bands, some of which who are also playing NRMAL. Among the 16 acts playing our broadcast is Sexores on February 28th at 10 AM PST/12 PM CST.
KEXP: Mexico City is one of the most eclectic musical epicenters in the world. What do you think about the current independent music scene in your country?
Sexores: Two of us are not from here, but we moved to this city because in contrast to Ecuador, Mexico has a structured music industry and that is what we needed to take the next step with Sexores. Now we are with Piaka Roela, our current Mexican bass player and we have talked about the variety of genres and musical styles of independent projects here that have managed to proliferate thanks to the media and the opening of the public to new sounds. Although there are also limitations such as the provision of the largest venues to present emerging projects, groups have been created that open their own spaces and that have boosted the career of many bands or soloists. It is likely that in one night you will come across two or three shows by independent artists and discover music that you will surely follow and want to have on your favorites list.
KEXP: Music in Spanish, Latin American, is having exponents all over the world with strong messages. That they believe that there is in this music, today, that is captivating without geographical limits.
We really believe that it is like a kind of brand, the "Latin American brand", and has been enhanced by the media's interest in diversifying content. Latin America has an advantage in multiculturalism, this has undoubtedly caused artists to experiment with different styles and sounds, generating variety in the proposals and capturing the interest of international music markets. We, for example, are a band influenced by the English new wave and we have made music based on those sounds but nuanced them with the baggage of the different cultures that we have been able to absorb.

KEXP viajará por primera vez al centro musical latinoamericano de Ciudad de México para registrar lo mejor de la escena actual de este país azteca del 26 al 1 de marzo. Algunas de estas bandas forman parte del line up de Nrmal, el festival local que este año cumplirá su primera década y nosotros, lo celebraremos con esta alianza musical junto a ellos y a Panoram Studios.
Este viaje contará con presentaciones en vivo transmitidas al aire a 90.3 FM en Seattle y transmisiones audiovisuales en vivo por el canal de YouTube de KEXP. Se presentarán un total de 15 bandas en vivo, incluyendo a Sexores quien nos comparte su mensaje y punto de vista sobre la actual escena musical mexicana.
KEXP: Ciudad de México es uno de los epicentros musicales más eclécticos del mundo. ¿Qué opinan sobre la actual escena musical independiente de su país?
Sexores: Dos de nosotros no somos de aquí, pero nos mudamos a esta ciudad porque en contraste con Ecuador, México tiene una industria musical estructurada y eso es lo que necesitábamos para dar el siguiente paso con Sexores. Ahora estamos junto a Piaka Roela, nuestra actual bajista mexicana y hemos conversado acerca de la variedad de géneros y estilos musicales de proyectos independientes de aquí que han logrado proliferar gracias a los medios de difusión y la apertura del público a nuevos sonidos. Aunque también existen limitantes como la disposición de los venues más grandes para presentar proyectos emergentes, se han creado colectivos que abren sus propios espacios y que han impulsado la carrera de muchas bandas o solistas. Es probable que en una noche te topes con dos o tres shows de artistas independientes y que descubras música que seguro seguirás y que quieras tener en tu lista de favoritos.
La música en español, la latinoamericana, está teniendo exponentes en todo en mundo con mensajes contundentes. Que creen que hay en esta música, hoy, que está cautivando sin límites geográficos.
Sexores: La verdad creemos que es como una especie de marca, la "marca latinoamericana", y se ha visto potenciada por el interés de los medios en diversificar contenidos. Latinoamérica tiene una ventaja en la multiculturalidad, esto sin duda ha hecho que artistas se metan a experimentar con distintos estilos y sonoridades, generando variedad en las propuestas y logrando captar el interés de mercados musicales internacionales. Nosotros por ejemplo, somos una banda influenciada por la new wave inglesa y hemos hecho música en base a esos sonidos pero matizándolos con el bagaje de las distintas culturas que hemos podido absorber.
