KEXP is traveling to Mexico City for the first time from Feb. 26 to March 1 to record some of the best acts in the Aztec country’s current scene. The station is teaming up with Panoram Studios and the NRMAL Festival – which celebrates its first decade of existence this year – to air and live stream performances from bands, some of which who are also playing NRMAL. Among the 16 acts playing our broadcast is Elsa y Elmar on Feb. 26 at 12:30 p.m. PST/2:30 p.m. CST.
Elsa y Elmar is the musical project of Colombian singer-songwriter Elsa Carvajal, who describes her music as “spiritual pop.” Carvajal launched the project while studying at Berklee College of Music in 2011, and blends the traditional sounds of her native Colombia with more electronic styles a la Tame Impala.
While Carvajal is the leader of the group, she prefers the idea of being accompanied, rather than performing as a solo artist. As such, she refers to her collaborators as “her sea,” and her band name literally translates to “Elsa and the Sea.” In 2014 she won the Grand Prize in the Latin category of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her song "Me Viene Bien.” She is incredibly popular on the festival circuit and garnered worldwide attention by opening for Coldplay.
KEXP reached out to Carvajal to get her take on Mexico's music scene and the Latin music she's loving right now.
KEXP: Mexico City is one of the most eclectic musical epicenters in the world. What do you think about the current independent music scene in your country?
Elsa y Elmar: Exactly one year ago I moved to this city. I lived in Oakland, CA. Since I arrived, I received an avalanche of talent, opportunities, friends, collaborations. Not only in the scene, but also in the city, something is always happening.
For me, the most incredible thing is that it is a very noble and at the same time demanding environment. We are a group of people who support each other and who are looking to nourish and sell themselves.
Latin American music and music in Spanish is being featured all over the world with strong messages. What do you think there is in today’s music that is captivating without geographical limits?
There is flavor, there is passion, there are things to be said, there is strength and desire to be heard. What I see is that Latin American artists and the industry itself is thinking big and if Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world, it's about time.

KEXP: Ciudad de México es uno de los epicentros musicales más eclécticos del mundo. ¿Qué opinan sobre la actual escena musical independiente de su país?
Elsa y Elmar: Hace exactamente un año me mudé a esta ciudad. Vivía en Oakland, CA. Desde que llegué, me recibió una avalancha de talento, de oportunidades, de amigos, de colaboraciones. No sólo en la escena, sino también en la ciudad, siempre está pasando algo.
Para mí, lo más increíble es que es un ambiente muy noble y al mismo tiempo exigente. Somos un grupo de personas que se apoyan entre sí y que están buscando nutrirse y expandirse.
La música en español, la latinoamericana, está teniendo exponentes en todo el mundo con mensajes contundentes. Que creen que hay en esta música, hoy, que está cautivando sin límites geográficos?
Hay sabor, hay pasión, hay cosas por decir, hay fuerza y ganas de ser escuchados. Lo que veo es que los artistas latinoamericanos y la misma industria está pensando en grande y si el español es la segunda lengua más hablada del mundo, ya era hora.
