On the heels of his latest album with the Jicks, Sparkle Hard, Stephen Malkmus has announced that his long-in-the-making electronic record will finally see its release. Last year, after 13 years of tinkering, Malkmus was ready to reveal it to the world but his label, Matador, thought it better if the more straightforward guitar rock album dropped first. Now that Sparkle Hard has been safely and successfully released, Malkmus’ electronic debut will be making its appearance on March 15.
Titled Groove Denied, the record marks the Pavement frontman’s first solo album since his 2001 self-titled LP. Groove Denied sees Malkmus ditch the guitar for: “Bass, drums, E drums with addictive drums, shitloads of weird old echoes, ableton, memory moog, roland 2080, 808, simmons drum machine, boss 303, guitar, vox, tambourine, shakers, organ, and Yamaha keyboard.” Today, Malkmus shares the lead single, “Viktor Borgia,” via a video featuring a CGI dance battle between himself, a businessman, and Ariana Grande.
