By far, my rarest and most cherished record is an acetate of Prince’s “Irresistible Bitch.”
Prince gave this record to me personally when I was DJing at First Avenue. One night while hunched over the turntables working a mix, I felt a tap on my shoulder, turned around, and there was Prince holding the record asking if I would play it. Later that evening when I worked it into the mix, Prince ran down to the dance floor and stood in the middle of it, listening to how it sounded on the big system while a frenzied swarm of dancers worked their bodies, most oblivious to the song’s creator standing in their midst. When the night ended, Prince asked me what I thought of the song, the arrangement, and the mix. Then, he gave me the record. It’s possible there’s only one copy of it on the planet. I only played it once, that night. And, even if it wasn’t rare, it still would be my most cherished. R.I.P. Prince.
