Chan Marshall has revealed the third single from her forthcoming Cat Power record, Wanderer. “Stay” is a cover of the Rihanna hit from 2012 and follows previous singles “Woman,” featuring Lana Del Rey, and “Wanderer.” Wanderer is out October 5 via Domino Records and is the first Cat Power record in six years, following 2012’s Sun.
“I love the tradition of covering songs,” Marshall says of taking on the Rihanna hit. “I think it’s one of the highest compliments you can pay another artist. It’s one of the great traditions in American music and one of the true pleasures of music history.” Marshall has a long history of releasing covers, including an album composed entirely of them, 2000’s aptly titled The Covers Record. The achingly powerful song comes with a video shot by her frequent collaborator Greg Hunt in the Los Angeles studio of Rob Schnapf, simply featuring Marshall on piano.
Marshall says this about the new record: “The course my life has taken in this journey — going from town to town, with my guitar, telling my tale; with reverence to the people who did this generations before me. Folk singers, blues singers, and everything in between. They were all wanderers, and I am lucky to be among them.”
Watch the video for “Stay” below and catch Cat Power at the Showbox on Saturday, Nov. 17.
