Chan Marshall, better known as Cat Power, has unveiled a cover of the Burt Bacharach and Hal David-penned classic “What the World Needs Now.” The surprisingly cheerful cover is included on the deluxe vinyl edition of Marshall’s latest album, Wanderer, released in October. Marshall has performed the song during a number of her live sets for the past few years and follows a series of covers over the years including a gorgeously stripped-down take on Rihanna’s “Stay” that appeared on Wanderer and her 2000 record comprised entirely of covers, straightforwardly titled The Covers Record.

“I love the tradition of covering songs,” Marshall has previously said. “I think it’s one of the highest compliments you can pay another artist. It’s one of the great traditions in American music and one of the true pleasures of music history.”

Previous artists who have covered “What the World Needs Now” include Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, and Luther Vandross. The original was recorded by Jackie DeShannon Listen to Marshall’s take below.
