For his fourth solo album, Chilean-born (now L.A.-based) singer-songwriter, musician, and film and music video director Alex Anwandter achieves pop perfection! From the super catchy, dance-worthy melodies to the effortlessly classy Brazilian ballad covers, there's not a dull moment on the album. Latinoamericana is characteristically political as well as personal, touching on all of the subjects Alex has become well-known and respected for in Chile and Latin America, at the forefront of race, gender, sexuality, and politics. Alex has previously been nominated for Latin Grammy's both for his music and his videos, though this could be his best release to date! Hopefully, Alex will make it back to Seattle and the KEXP studio in the near future, but for now, here's what Alex had to say about what he's been up to lately!
KEXP: The last time we spoke, you were our in-studio guest, performing acoustic versions of songs from the 2016 album Amiga and 2011's Rebeldes and you were in Seattle promoting your first feature film You'll Never Be Alone which premiered at SIFF. What have you been up to in the last two years?
Alex Anwandter: I toured a lot with Amiga and at some point, I started writing and recording the songs that would become Latinoamericana. I had decided to move to L.A. sometime before the Trump election and the "rain on my parade" feeling that it entailed translated into the starting point of examining a larger shift towards an ultra-conservative, sometimes outright neo-fascist presence sweeping the Americas. I also finished a new screenplay I intend to shoot next year.
Your new album Latinoamericana just came out on October 12th and it seems like your most developed and mature release yet. As usual, you don't hold back on exposing your political viewpoint. Are you, or have you ever been concerned about that getting you into trouble in Chile and does that have anything to do with your migrating to the U.S.?
Not at all. If anywhere, it could get me in trouble in the U.S. where there seems to be less and less tolerance for what's considered criticism towards racist or discriminatory policies. I'm honestly scared this type of evidence-denying authority-figure will be elected in Chile, as it just happened in Brazil.
Can you talk about your decision to move to L.A.?
It was completely based on needing a change, nothing more mysterious than that. It certainly wasn't a calculated career-move or anything. I don't really think in those terms.
Chile is home to so many incredible musical talents and increasingly so, it seems. Here in Seattle, we can attribute a large amount of artistic inspiration to the gloomy, dreary, dark seasons of fall and winter. What do you believe has inspired so many Chilean artists lately to create and share all of this wonderful music?
Gloomy and dreary certainly "helps." We have those winters too and you can add being pretty much trapped geographically by mountains, the ocean, the desert, and glaciers. I think we sometimes feel we are the only people on earth, which leads to both bizarre and close-minded behavior and pretty great art. We're all quite intense.
What is on the horizon for Alex Anwandter? Can we expect an album tour in the near future? Will you take some time off to enjoy the holidays? What do you like to do for fun other than create music?
Oddly enough, I've been writing a lot of music. It probably has to do with the feeling of getting the last album off my chest and it being "out there" now. It's like being an empty canvas again. It feels nice and energizing. I also don't feel as pessimistic as I did when I was in the middle of writing Latinoamericana. I wouldn't say my mood is optimistic now but certainly more embattled and empowered. I'll certainly be touring the new album, I have a show in L.A. at the Roxy in January and we're looking to add shows in the U.S.
As for the holidays, I'm not really into them but I'll definitely take the day off! Other than music, some people will know, I'm a total film buff so I usually spend my free time watching movies or reading about film. I'm kind of in mourning now that FilmStruck got canceled so I have to see how to fill that gap now.

¡Hola! Igualmente Hice muchas giras con Amiga y en algún momento comencé a escribir y grabar las canciones que se convertirían en Latinoamericana. Decidí mudarme a Los Ángeles un poco antes de la elección de Trump y la "rain on my parade", sintiendo que éso se tradujo en el punto de partida para examinar el giro hacia una presencia neo fascista y ultraconservadora, a veces explícitamente, que se extendió por las Américas. También terminé un nuevo guión que intento filmar el año que viene.
Tu nuevo álbum, Latinoamericana, acaba de salir el 12 de octubre pasado y parece ser tu lanzamiento más desarrollado y maduro hasta el momento. Como de costumbre, no retienes la necesidad de exponer tu punto de vista político. ¿En algún momento te preocupó que ésto te haya metido en problemas en Chile y tenga que ver con tu migración a los EE. UU.?
De ningún modo. Podría meterme en problemas en los Estados Unidos, donde parece haber cada vez menos tolerancia hacia lo que se considera una crítica a las políticas racistas o discriminatorias. Sinceramente, tengo miedo de que esta figura de autoridad que niega lo evidente sea elegida en Chile, como acaba de suceder en Brasil.
¿Puedes hablar sobre tu decisión de mudarte a L.A.?
Está completamente basada en la necesidad de un cambio, nada más misterioso que eso. Realmente no fue un cambio de carrera calculado ni nada. Sinceramente no pienso en esos términos.
Chile es el hogar de una infinidad de talentos musicales increíbles y pareciera que cada vez más. Aquí en Seattle podemos atribuirle gran parte de la inspiración artística, a las estaciones sombrías, tristes y oscuras del otoño y el invierno. ¿Qué crees que ha inspirado, últimamente, a tantos artistas chilenos para crear y compartir toda esta maravillosa música?
Sombrío y triste sin duda "ayuda". También tenemos esos inviernos y puedes agregar que estás atrapado geográficamente en las montañas, el océano, el desierto y los glaciares. Creo que a veces sentimos que somos las únicas personas en la tierra, lo que conduce a comportamientos bizarros y de mente cerrada pero a un muy buen arte. Todos somos bastante intensos.
¿Qué hay en el horizonte para Alex Anwandter? ¿Podemos esperar una gira del álbum en un futuro próximo? ¿Te tomas un tiempo libre para disfrutar de las vacaciones? ¿Qué te gusta hacer por diversión que no sea crear música?
Curiosamente, he estado escribiendo mucha música. Probablemente tiene que ver con la sensación de tener el último álbum fuera de mi pecho y que ahora esté "ahí fuera". Es como volver a ser un lienzo vacío. Se siente agradable y energizante. Tampoco me siento tan pesimista como cuando estaba escribiendo Latinoamericana. No diría que mi estado de ánimo es optimista ahora, pero ciertamente está más combativo y empoderado. Seguramente estaré de gira con el nuevo álbum, tengo un show en Los Ángeles en Roxy para el próximo enero y estamos buscando agregar shows en los Estados Unidos.
En cuanto a las vacaciones, no me gustan mucho ¡pero definitivamente me tomaré el día libre! Aparte de la música, algunas personas lo sabrán, soy un fanático de las películas, por lo que generalmente paso mi tiempo libre viendo o leyendo sobre ellas. Estoy como de luto ahora que FilmStruck se canceló, así que ahora tengo que ver cómo llenar ese vacío.
