Holiday hype has reached critical mass. Every year, without fail, someone you know will make an anecdote about Christmas decor going up in department stores earlier and earlier. Realistically, you could pick up your Halloween costume and Christmas lights before Labor Day if you’re really ambitious. All the glistening tinsel, chestnuts roasting, and velvet-suited men shimmying down tour chimney can get to be a lot and surely there’s more than a few of us who’ve experienced extreme holiday stress. Sometimes it makes you stop and wonder, “why are we making such a big deal about this?” It’s a question that Busan, South Korea band Say Sue Me ask with the title track to their upcoming holiday EP, Christmas, It’s Not A Biggie – out Dec. 7 via Damnably.
“It is a carol song in surf and rockabilly style of the 50s ~ 60s,” Say Sue Me says of the song in a press statement. “You can expect someone might have a hard time during this period because of the coldness of winter, and be sad and depressed about the passing of another year. Yet strangely most people during Christmas seem happy and warm. I want to think that Christmas is not a biggie, but for some reason I feel like I can be a better person during this time.”
With rolling surf rock licks and a chipper melody, Say Sue Me find a bit of bliss in the confounding season. More than just a celebration of the season, the band takes time to assess our compulsion to be merry and bright ever December. It’s a worthy question, one that encapsulates approaching Christmas in 2018. Even if your year has been blue and bleak, sometimes the gingerbread smell and camaraderie can make you forget all of that. It’s easy to get caught up in the capitalist push to shop and the unrelenting cycle of tradition and get pessimistic. Yet on “Christmas, It’s Not a Biggie,” Say Sue Me takes comfort in the little gifts – like experiencing joy for seemingly no reason at all.
