Review Revue: Edward Ka-Spel - Khataclimici, China Doll

Welcome to Review Revue, where every Thursday I dig through the KEXP stacks to share DJ reviews and comments written on the covers of LPs (and occasionally CDs) in the ’80s and ’90s, when the station was called KCMU, the DJs were volunteers, and people shared their opinions on little white labels instead of the internet.

If only I really had some time to dig into the KEXP stacks and do a proper audit of the records and reviews. I could come up with hard numbers, quantify things like "artist with the most albums," and "artist with the most positive reviews," and "artist with the most comments per album." But instead I just have this decade-plus series, an imperfect and haphazard record (so to speak) of the albums I've written about over the years. All that said, if I were to guess what artist might be in the running for the most positive comments on the most albums, Edward (or Ed) Ka-Spel would be a strong contender.

I don't know how many of his ten-plus albums from the 20th century are in the stacks (not even counting his albums with Legendary Pink Dots), but this is the third I've posted here, and every single one seems to be covered in glowing praise. Ka-Spel may not exactly be a household name, but he's certainly doing something right - and he's still going strong. He released a collaboration with Amanda Palmer last year, Legendary Pink Dots released a new mini-album this year, and with any luck he'll be touring in the states next year. Go Ed!

"Eddy baby. Know him, learn him, love him. This is swell music in the style of Legendary Pink Dots."

"I'm so glad we got this! Excellent production!"

"Ed - you've done it again!"

"Jeezus it's Ed! #5 and it it it it it"

"(I know who you are because of the pen.)"

"Segue as needed . . . they all run together . . ."

"Play the 1st part of 'Tick Tock' backwards, see what they are saying to you! This is great stuff."

"Play something besides 'Tick-Tock.'"

"Since it's hard to segue . . . it's ok to play ALL of one side. This guy is great (check out his other solo albums too, esp. 'Eyes China Doll.' PS: Lyrics inside may help w/q-ing."

"Not hard to segue. Not my place to say, but this should be in heavy. Brilliant post cynical nuclear letdown with a smile."
"It is easy and it's fantastic. HHH."
