Last week, St. Vincent released a stripped-down and reworked version of last year’s studio album MASSEDUCTION titled MassEducation. Last night, Annie Clark stopped by Brooklyn’s BAM Opera House, where Jimmy Kimmel Live is relocated for the week, and made the fitting choice to perform the stripped-down version of “New York.” The intimate performance features a dramatic reveal.
MassEducation was performed entirely by Clark on vocals and Bartlett on piano and recorded live in the studio over two nights last year while MASSEDUCTION was being mixed. “We neither rehearsed nor spoke about how to approach my song, but rather, played 2-3 live takes, picked the best one, and trusted in the feeling of the moment,” says Clark. “It was fast. Intuitive. Discovered. Raw.”
Below, watch Clark and Bartlett’s performance of “New York” on Jimmy Kimmel Live and St. Vincent’s KEXP in-studio performance from last March.
