It's with great sadness that KEXP reports Dave Rosser, guitarist for The Afghan Whigs, passed away yesterday, Tuesday, June 17th, at the age of 50. Late last year, Rosser was diagnosed with inoperable colon cancer. The band state on their Facebook page:
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our friend, brother and inspiration.Dave Rosser passed away peacefully last evening surrounded by love. Thank you to all who kept him in their hearts. He is forever in ours.
While not a founding member of the band, Rosser has been on board since the band's 2014 reunion album, Do to the Beast -- at the time, their first new music in 16 years. He was a natural choice as a member of frontman Greg Dulli's side projects The Gutter Twins and The Twilight Singers. In addition to his work with The Afghan Whigs, Rosser contributed to releases by Joseph Arthur, Mark Lanegan, and Ani DiFranco, to name a few. In a recent interview with Guitar World magazine, he reported he was "record[ing] a lot at the house…[and] making a lot of music with friends."
