Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, selected by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is "Give Up" by American Wrestlers, from their forthcoming 2016 LP, Goodbye Terrible Youth, out November 4th on Fat Possum Records.
American Wrestlers - Give Up (MP3)
In a recent interview, American Wrestlers frontman Gary McClure described wanting his new material to be "something you can do handstands and backflips and start small fires to." This type of unhinged exuberance is quite evident on the first single from American Wrestlers' sophomore LP, Goodbye Terrible Youth, titled "Give Up." On the track, McClure conjures the spirits of Talulah Gosh and Josef K., mixing a jangle pop sensibility with his own expert songwriting craft and energy. While the debut American Wrestlers album felt intimate (partially energized by its sense of claustrophobia), McClure sounds newly invigorated by his backing band, "Give Up" both rocking and jangling harder than his past material could have hinted at. When the guitar solo kicks in towards the final minute, it's almost enough to make you pick up that matchbook and light the edge of that ever-expanding to-do list on fire. Put it out, though.
American Wrestlers have tour dates scheduled through the end of the year, with none coming near the Pacific Northwest area. However, check out the band's Facebook and Bandcamp for more information. In the mean time, check out the band's video for their 2014 standout "I Can Do No Wrong."

Without DJ Chilly—and music lovers like you—I'd be helpless at the mercy of tiny robots. And algorithms. Ah, science and math, my old nemeses. *shudder*
