  • L.A. ladies Warpaint share a new song... titled "New Song." Well played, Warpaint, well played. The track is slated for their third full-length, Heads Up, which finds the group moving (no pun intended) in a more dance-oriented direction. Vocalist/guitarist Emily Kokal says, via a press release, "We’ve always had this really jammy, high-energy live show compared to some of our records. We all love to dance. We didn’t want to take away from the emotion or the core feeling of what our band is all about — which I don’t even think we could take out if we wanted, because it is who we are — but we wanted to bump the speed up and have a little bit more fun. Listen below. Heads up, Heads Up hits stores September 23rd via Rough Trade. [Stereogum]

  • KEXP faves Frightened Rabbit covered another KEXP fave, The National, during their Lollapalooza set this past weekend in Chicago. Watch fan-shot footage of frontman Scott Hutchison's take on the 2007 Boxer single "Mistaken for Strangers" below. The Scottish bunnies are clearly fans: their most recent album Painting of a Panic Attack was produced by The National's Aaron Dessner. [Stereogum]

  • Speaking of covers, Sharon Van Etten is the latest to take on the theme song to Adult Swim’s cartoon Squidbillies. (Kurt Vile shared his take just last month.) Not surprisingly, she manages to take a cartoon theme song, and turn it into one of her melancholy, heartbreaking masterpieces. Damn you, Van Etten. Watch her recording the song in her Brooklyn studio below: [Consequence of Sound]

  • More new music from Phantogram: check out the single "Run Run Blood" below, a song co-founder Josh Carter explains "is about the sad state of the world we live in today. It feels like the blind leading the blind sometimes." The track will appear on their third album titled Three, out September 16th (not the 3rd?) via Republic. The duo play Friday, October 7th at the Paramount. [Under the Radar]
