Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is "Early Spring" by Versing from their 2016 EP, Nude Descending, out on Youth Riot Records.

Versing - Early Spring (MP3)

Though Versing's Nude Descending EP came out back at the end of January, it's the ideal cure to your mid-summer malaise. Mixing elements of 90s faves like Versus, Built to Spill, and Bedhead (at their least lethargic), Versing have carved out a place for themselves in Seattle's independent music scene. "Early Spring"'s soaring melody line, deadpan vocals, and interwoven guitar-bass parts wouldn't sound out of place on a college radio playlist circa 1998, which is fitting as the band's members met working at KUPS (the college radio station of University of Puget Sound, in Tacoma, WA). "Early Spring" is a track that begs for a music video shot on VHS featuring sun-swept exteriors and skaters, think a PG-rated version of Larry Clark's Kids. Call it the Tacoma Sound. And it's exactly what this summer needed.

Versing will be playing in town throughout the next few months, including a show this Saturday, July 23rd, at Unicorn's FREE Capitol Hill Block Party sideshow at 8 PM, and Sunday, July 24th, at Blue Moon Tavern, with Snuff Redux, Tanger, and Rego. They will assuredly be playing more show this summer, so check out their Facebook and Bandcamp pages for more information. For now, here's the the title track to the Nude Descending EP:
