Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Sour Silk”, by Cullen Omori from his 2016 debut, New Misery, out tomorrow on Sub Pop.
Cullen Omori - Sour Silk (MP3)
Having already crowned himself Sub Pop's resident sad boy, Cullen Omori, former Smith Westerns frontman is back at it with a new project. The Smith Westerns sound, tiptoeing at the edge of indie rock- is something that Cullen Omori wasn't afraid to move away from as he went solo. He was not afraid to jump headfirst into some new experimental sounds- and it feels so right.
Some songs within this more shoegaze-y genre take a few listens for them to resonate. "Sour Silk" is not one of these songs. From the get-go, the song has you helplessly hooked. And even after the 5th, 6th, and 7th listen- you're still not going to be sick of it. It's incredible how perfectly "Sour Silk's" title captures the its sound. Extremely beautiful and hypnotic, piercing while soothing, it's the perfect reason to hit the "repeat" button- a lot. "Sour Silk" is a single off of the highly anticipated album, New Misery, due out on March 18 (that's tomorrow!).
Catch Cullen Omori in Seattle on April 1st as part of his Sad Guy No More tour. You can get tickets to the show at Barboza here. He'll also record a session in KEXP's live room, which will be broadcast on KEXP on Saturday, April 9th, at 1PM. For now, keep up with Cullen on his Facebook page and check out his new video for "Cinnamon", another single from New Misery.
