Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Another Evening, Another Town” by The Pooches, from their 2016 self-titled record on Lame-O Records.

The Pooches - Another Evening, Another Town (MP3)

Glasgow’s The Pooches started out as the one-man project of Jimmy Hindle during the summer of 2013. After launching a successful Kickstarter campaign to release their first eighteen track record, Smoochin’ With The Pooches, he's since added three members to the lineup and released numerous collections of songs. The full band now includes Hindle, Calvin Halliday on drums, Andy Kelly on guitar, and Gavin Cormack on bass. 2016 has been quite a busy year for the Scottish group, releasing not only the Heart Attack EP earlier this year in January, but also their self-titled LP in September.

“Another Evening, Another Town” is the third track off of The Pooches’ latest eponymous release. Hindle’s vocals use the same melody throughout almost the entire song, making this track infectiously catchy. His voice remains fairly monotone through the song, adding to the light, nonchalant manner that is reminiscent of Belle & Sebastian. As Hindle details life on the road, a short guitar riff remains in the background as another creates a floating vibe behind Hindle’s words. By the time the chorus rolls around for the last time at the end of the three minute track, you’ll be singing and humming along for the rest of the day.

If you’re lucky enough to live in Glasgow, you can catch The Pooches opening for Modern Baseball early next year. No plans to come to the States yet, but keep your eye on their Bandcamp and Facebook for any changes. Watch the video for another song off of The Pooches LP, “The Light,” below.
