Song of the Day: Wesen - Beachboys

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. This week, we are featuring songs by Icelandic artists performing Iceland Airwaves 2016.

Wesen - Beachboys (MP3)

Today's featured song is "Beachboys" by Wesen from their 2016 debut, Wall of Pain, on Hidden Trail Records.You wouldn't be an Icelandic musician if you didn't have multiple projects, and Júlía Hermannsdóttir of Oyama and solo artist Loji Höskuldsson (also formerly of Sudden Weather Change) are no exceptions. Together, they focus at least part of their creative energies as the electronic pop duo Wesen (often stylized as ₩€$€‎₦). Last month, they released their debut, Wall of Pain, and it's pure joy. Whether their subjects are critical, despondent, alluring or lovelorn, their sounds is always heart-rendingly beautiful. Today's featured song, "Beachboys", is a delightful longing for summer, an escape into a woozy wash of reverbed guitar and Hermannsdóttir's alluring voice - it's one you want to follow deep into the wet sand on a sunny day, especially on these colder and rainier days.

Wesen's album is now out on Brighton label Hidden Trail Records. The pair is currently playing Iceland Airwaves Festival with no plans yet outside for the rest of the world, but we hope that changes soon.
