Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is the self-released single “VHS or Sharon Stone” by Hobosexual.

Hobosexual - VHS or Sharon Stone (MP3)

Pretty much the opposite of the squeaky clean, banjo-toting folksters that have characterized much of Seattle’s popular music this decade, Ben Harwood and Jeff Silva are Hobosexual, a bad-ass and truly authentic rock’n’roll duo. Don’t let the name deceive you; Hobosexual is merely the antithesis of metrosexual. Get your mind out of the gutter. They’ve described themselves as “laid-back dudes who like to play music and have fun” and that attitude is evident in their deceptively simplistic, pure rock sound. Their new single “VHS or Sharon Stone” is an endeavor in 80’s pop-culture name-dropping, evocative of The Dandy Warhols and Bloodhound Gang (the early good stuff).

Formed in 2009, Hobosexual has released two full-length albums, Hobosexual and Hobosexual II, and an EP, Good Bad Taste.  They’ve completed several West Coast tours, played the festival circuit, had two songs on the Showtime series Shameless, and were featured in a 2015 documentary The Glamour and the Squalor. Perhaps most impressive of all, they have their own action figures.

Keep up with Hobosexual via their Facebook page and website, and be sure to catch their live act (for FREE) on Saturday, October 22, when they’ll be opening for Thunderpussy at KEXP’s R-Day Celebration at the Old Rainier Brewery. For now, you can watch an entire set they played last month at Neumos:
