This Sunday, January 17th, KEXP is proud to present the 16th Annual Expansions MLK Unity Celebration! Taking place for the third time at the beautiful Columbia City Theater, the festivities will be begin at 8 PM and go until 2 AM and features KEXP’s Expansions DJs Riz, Kid Hops and Masa on the decks! Join these three stellar DJs as they host this annual event to bring the Seattle community together to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his message through the art of dancing and good music!

"For those of you who tirelessly organize, march, protest, and volunteer, we want to especially recognize, honor and celebrate your work. You are truly making our community and our world a better place,” said KEXP DJ Riz. “This love dance is especially for you.” The event will feature community partners Skate Like A Girl, Washington Bus and Pike Market Senior Center and Food Bank. They’ll be onsite doing outreach and dancing with the rest of us! Tickets available online and at the door. About Expansions on KEXPExpansions began in late 1995 as the brainchild of Riz Rollins as a response to the burgeoning acid jazz scene that was enjoying popularity in local clubs, but underexposed on the local airwaves. Even at its inception it has always been important that the show not be commanded by any monolithic style or single host, but has always enjoyed 3 hosts who bring a variety of influences and style to the final mix. An Expansions mix will include old and new releases in its mix in a variety of genres. An Expansions mix can included trip-hop, chill, ambient, drum and bass, house, dub, electronica, jazz, sometimes world music, sometimes rock, sometimes... well, sometimes even the most disparate elements come together thanks to the expert curator efforts of its current hosts Kid Hops, Masa, and Riz. About Columbia City TheaterThe Columbia City Theater boasts one of the most beautiful settings for live music and performance in Seattle. The theater is going through a new renaissance under the direction of new general managers. It has been dubbed “The city’s finest sounding room,” by Spin Magazine. About Skate Like a GirlSkate Like a Girl is a unique organization locally and internationally providing an innovative approach to female empowerment and leadership, focusing on the individual and promoting women’s skateboarding on the community level. The goal is to create a collective of girls and women who strive for social justice. These ideas are captured in our vision, mission and values. About Washington BusThe Washington Bus engages tomorrow’s leaders on their own terms, and empowers them through education, civic and cultural engagement, and hands-on democracy. About Pike Market Senior Center and Food BankThe Pike Market Senior Center offers nutritious meals, social and fitness activities, and access to social workers for people age 55 and older. All services offered at PMSC are provided free of charge and are designed to promote healthy aging and stability for older adults.
