Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ's think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “The Warm Parade” by Seattle band Black Whales from their 2014 album, Through the Prism, Gently, on Sunless Sea Records.
Black Whales - The Warm Parade (MP3)
Black Whales is a Song of the Day veteran by this point. Their moody "Vietnam" served as a proper introduction to the Seattle band while "Walking In The Dark" provided a fitting start to the darker days of winter. "The Warm Parade" continues the bands showcase of versatility within the realms of psych pop. The track may just be the perfect song for a summer cruise with the windows down. Slightly reverberated vocals soar over warm guitar chords that are met with subtle organs. The song's chorus winds through it all, hammering home the spirit of the carefree "wooo" at the beginning of the track. Lead vocalist Alex Robert repeatedly croons the infectious line "I feel a light is coming on," but one look at Black Whales Song of the Day discography clearly shows that a light has been on for Black Whales for quite a long time.
You can catch them this Saturday at 5pm at the West Seattle Music Festival, at Capitol Hill Block Party on 7/24 or at Neumos on 8/22. Keep up with the band on their website and Facebook and check out their performance appearance at the Seattle Center Mural Amphitheater for the Concerts at the Mural series:
