Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Come To Your House” by Bouquet from the 2015 In A Dream EP on Ulrike Records/Folktale Records.
Bouquet - Come To Your House (MP3)
The songs of the Los Angeles duo Bouquet have a simplicity to them that belies their sharp craftwork. Both originally hailing from the Bay Area, guitarist/vocalist Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs and keyboardist Max Forman began Bouquet in 2012, seeking to merge their respective artistic backgrounds – Riggs is a visual artists and alumnus of San Francisco's the Finches, Foreman has a background in experimental and instrumental music – into a musical direction that neither of them had gone in previously. In addition to becoming a live staple around LA across the past few years, the band has put out three releases, including this year's In A Dream EP. A highlight from their debut EP, "Come To Your House" is a clean slice of pop minimalism, executing its magnetic melodicism with a restraint that makes its nuance seem deceptively modest. The lyrical themes are tried and true, which, combined with Riggs' incandescent glow of a voice, sound warm and familiar, perfectly aligning with a simple keyboards-and-guitar arrangement. Even on the first listen, "Come To Your House" feels like an old friend: a pop tune with a sense of familiarity, but plenty of textural details to get lost in over and over again.
Bouquet's next show is at Non Plus Ultra in Los Angeles on May 1st. If they announce plans to play some shows up the coast or elsewhere, that news will be on their Facebook and Bandcamp. Below, watch the video for the band's 2012 track "Drifted".
