Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Black Cherry Pie” by JEFF The Brotherhood from the 2015 album Wasted on the Dream on Infinity Cat.
JEFF The Brotherhood - Black Cherry Pie (MP3)
The Infinity Cats are back! Actually, Nashville's JEFF The Brotherhood never really went anywhere, but after spending a few years on a major, they're back to doing their own thing, on their own label, and finally releasing their long overdue LP, Wasted on the Dream. Brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall don't consider their time on Warner Bros. completely wasted, though, as they were able to record two "very, very expensive records", the second of which they've now brought back to Infinity Cat. Out last week, Wasted on the Dream is heavier and punchier than anything they've put out yet - an ass-kicking blend of hard rock, metal, grunge and punk - and thanks to the brothers' active insistence, the high production sheen doesn't bury but rather accentuates the album's raw energy and thick layer of fuzz.
Today's featured song, one of the LP's crunchiest and most hook-filled tracks, is also notable for its featured guest: Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson. Given their "sky's the limit" approach, the Orrall's took a stab at contacting the prog rock icon, who, funny enough, donated his part for free because he liked the song that much! You'll love this song too, whether you're a longtime JEFF fanatic or a fan of any balls out rock. Grab a slice now of "Black Cherry Pie"!
After you've had your fill, be sure to tune in, and watch live video, as JEFF The Brotherhood returns to perform Live on KEXP on Wednesday, April 1 (no joke!) at 1PM. Watch our Live Streaming video of the session here, and find more tour dates and music on their website and Facebook page. For now, here's another song from Wasted on the Dream, which they recorded last fall at KEXP:
