It’s time again for Friday on My Mind. Our weekly blog post where we look at videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News.
If you are in a relationship and have a partner, then Happy Valentine’s Day!!!! If you aren’t in a relationship or your heart is broken, then booooooo to the Hallmark-generated publicity advertising stunt that happens every February 14th!!!!! No matter what side of the fence you are on when it comes to the validity of Valentine’s Day, no one can deny that there is an abundance of songs for the glory and the pain of love. Here are a few for those feeling the hurt:
Soft Cell - Tainted Love
From 1981, this was a huge hit for Mark Almond and Soft Cell, but was originally recorded and released by soul singer Gloria Jones back in 1964.

Sinead O’Connor - Nothing Compares To You
Another song that was originally written by somebody else. One of songs that Sinead O’Connor is most well known for was not actually written by the singer-songwriter, but the one and only Prince.

The Police - Can’t Stand Losing You
Our third choice is from the 1978 Outlandos d’Amour release by The Police. When it actually comes down to it, this song was inspired by the idea of teenage suicide. This was the second single to ever be released by The Police. “Roxanne” being the first.

Before releasing their debut EP, Fitz and the Tantrums performed this song during The Morning Show from The Cutting Room Studios back on February 8, 2010.

The Magnetic Fields - Quick
The official video for this one seems to have taken its cues from Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street.

Airborne Toxic Event - Sometime Around Midnight
This song will tear your heart out and tear it to shreds.

House of Love - I Don’t Know Why I Love You
The title pretty much sums it up...

Compiling a playlist of songs about love? That's like trying to count all the Converse sneakers at an indie rock show: infinite. They always say, nothing is more inspiring than a break-up, and these songs (and Taylor Swift's career) prove that's true.
