Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. This week’s songs come during the 2015 Fall Fundraising Drive. Today’s song is “Nasty Grrls” by Childbirth from the 2015 album Women's Rights on Suicide Squeeze.
Childbirth - Nasty Grrls (MP3)
The supergroup (they embrace the tag) of members of Tacocat, Pony Time, and Chastity Belt, Childbirth's often-hilarious garage rock skewers tropes about gender and, more often than not, Seattle one one-liner-and-power-chord-combo at a time. With the release of their first tape, 2014's It's A Girl, the trio of Bree McKenna, Julia Shapiro, and Stacy Peck laid out their manifesto: no topic was off-limits from the scrubs-clad group as they humorously dismantled ignorant bros ("How Do You Do It?") and wrote their own theme song ("Childbirth"). Their sophomore effort, this year's Women's Rights, continues that trajectory with another set of songs that live up to the high expectations their titles propose ("Will You Let The Dogs In?", "Siri, Open Tinder"). If "Nasty Grrls" had any more snark, it would be a Gawker headline. But since it isn't inciting Hulk Hogan lawsuits, it's merely the most danceable ode to poor hygiene to ever be premiered on NPR. And while that's an admittedly small field, that doesn't stop "Nasty Grrls" from being raucous fun – a completely quotable list of "nasty" habits ("we dip everything in ranch" might be the best one) that cleverly turns out to be a list of things that everyone does at least one of, ultimately making the song as clever as it is catchy.
Childbirth are playing a record release (delivery?) show for Women's Rights at Chop Suey tonight, Friday, October 2, with Wimps, Universe People, and Mommy Long Legs. Get more info and tickets to that 21+ show here, keep up with the trio at their Facebook and Bandcamp, and watch the now-iconic video for "I Only Fucked You As A Joke".
