Song of the Day: Potty Mouth - Creeper Weed

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. This week’s songs come during the 2015 Fall Fundraising Drive. Today’s song is “Creeper Weed” by Potty Mouth, from their self-titled EP on Planet Whatever Records.

Potty Mouth have been through some changes since the release of their great 2013 album, Hellbent. They spent time with with Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney engineer John Goodmanson, downsized to a trio and polished up their sound in the process. All this change is apparent on the self-titled EP they released in August. But the cleverly written lyrics, deceptively catchy hooks and killer attitude that made Hellbent so appealing, are still at the core of the groups aesthetic. Change is also the theme of EP cut and song of the day "Creeper Weed." On it, vocalist/guitarist Abby Weems cooly lays down grungy verses in near sing talk fashion while a distorted guitar wails to the rhythm of a fat baseline. Heavier guitar riffs signal a declarative chorus of self acceptance that begs to be sung along to. It's a song that carries a tone of cool that can't be bought yet is undeniably fun at the same time.
