Friday On My Mind: Go Hawks!

It’s time again for Friday on My Mind. Our weekly blog post where we look at videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News. As 99% of Seattle knows, whether they like it or not, the Seattle Seahawks are defending Super Bowl Champs and 2015 NFC Championship winners. The Hawks are currently in Arizona preparing for Super Bowl 49 by watching Marshawn Lynch collect fines for wearing the wrong hat and then not talking about said hat. They made it into the the Super Bowl during the NFC Championship game with a historic (and bitter) defeat against the Green Bay Packers in overtime. At the end of the game, the players broke down emotionally, including Russell Wilson who went on to thank God for their win. While some might not think God had anything to do with it, plays like this will make you think twice about that:

And now here are some songs to get you pumped for this Sunday…The Verve- Bittersweet Symphony (Live on Radio 1) The Grammy nominated song, “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve has held up well since it’s release in 1999. Every Seahawks game starts with the team running onto the field to the tune of “Bittersweet Symphony”. The emotional strings are great way for the team to enter the stadium. Years of unfulfilled dreams made the song title really fitting. But now that the Seahawks have been winning, maybe they should just stick with the strings. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis- Can’t Hold Us Born and raised in Seattle, Macklemore a huge sports fan. He wrote a song about Dave Niehaus, and forbade the Oklahoma City Thunder, formerly the Seattle Supersonics, from using his song “Can’t Hold Us”. For those who aren't into sports, Oklahoma is the city that took our Sonics. If I hear they are playing "Rooster" from Alice in Chains, so help me God!!! Macklemore attends a good number of Seahawks games every year. The video for “Can’t Hold Us” features many shots of Seattle including the skyline and Space Needle. Macklemore played half time during last year’s other infamous NFC Championship game, which I'm sure inspired Richard Sherman to lose his mind about Michael Crabtree. Alice in Chains- Would (MTV Unplugged) Since the 2002 passing of Alice in Chains’ lead singer, Layne Staley, the band has released two albums, one in 2009 and one in 2013, with William DuVall on vocal duties. Seattle was the #1 seed and therefore hosted the NFC Championship where Seattle’s own, Alice in Chains performed from the Hawk’s Nest. The reincarnated Alice in Chains performed during halftime at this year’s NFC Championship game playing renditions of “Man in the Box” and “Would”. While we have many bands and their original line ups available here in Seattle, it was still nice to hear some of those songs played live. Plus it cursed the Green Bay Packers so next year you bring up Mad Season's new line up so help me God!!! Honorable Mention: Queen- We Are The Champions Freddie Mercury said he wrote the song thinking about football, although he was really thinking of English football, or as America calls it, soccer, and not American Football. For the current and soon to be repeat Champions- THE SEAHAWKS!!! See how we tied that in? So help me God!!!
