Motörhead needs no introduction, right? Right.
This year, not only will the legendary rock band (don't call 'em metal!) turn 40, but lead growler/bass-manhandler Lemmy will hit the big seven-oh, with no sign whatsoever of slowing down. 1916 was Lemmy and crew's ninth studio album, 16 years into their career. 22 years later, in 2013, they brought us album number 21, Aftershock; rumor has it they're heading into the studio for more this year.
I love how stoked the jaded indie rockers at KCMU were upon hearing this strange, blistering slab of vinyl. I also can't help but chuckle at the reference to "these old farts" way back in 1991!
"Motörhead still rock after all these years. This isn't their best or anything but it cooks along well enough. Try 1-3 or 2-4. Adventure pick 2-6, the title cut (Lemmy doing Pogues doing 'The Final Cut').""L"
"Riz says M"
"Cool it's in H! -Riz"
"Holy Rockin' Jeezus! This is what I like with my coffee in the morning. Love it!"
"I can't stop playing this a work - much to annoyance of my fellows. Fuck man. I guess you guys would like 'Going to Brazil' the closest thing to a dinosaur boogie on this."
"L? Be real! This rocks. Best thing these old farts have done in ages. Try 1-2, 1-4, 2-1 (a 'ballad,' of sorts), or 2-4. Watch out for 2-6 which is very different for MH but ultimately kind of cool in its own way (hing: it doesn't rock - at all). A fine effort. M at least."
"'Voices in the Sky' and 'Going to Brazil' are my faves. Mötes sez M or H!"
"Did any of you see Lemmy jamming w/the Paul Schaeffer (sp?) band on David Letterman (they covered Chuck Berry's 'Let It Rock') - a classic moment in rock history." [Oh, thank you Internet.]
"Rock and Roll!"
"We are cool to have this in H."
"Spörl sez Killer!!"
"Also on CD"
"My fave Motörhead studio release. Hard to beat No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith and No Remorse for the ultimate Motörhead fun, but this crunches!"
Reading's Slowdive were one of the bands that defined the shoegaze sound of the early '90s, although their career suffered somewhat in that their first album, Just for a Day, was released just as the British press was tiring of the scene and ready for some backlash. Today, they're remembered as a k…
Happy 2015! As always at the beginning of a new year there's been a lot of looking back at the year that just passed, but in this series I tend to cast my glance a bit farther back. So let's take a trip to 1984, and a little straight edge hardcore band from Boston called D.Y.S. I'm actually pretty …
