Deep Sea Diver - One By One (MP3)
Seattle's Deep Sea Diver's dynamic brand of indie rock is as kinetic as it is well-crafted. Founded by singer/guitarist Jessica Dobson in 2007, the project was initially a solo outlet, but by 2011, she'd joined up with drummer Peter Mansell and bassist Garrett Gue (and, more recently, by guitarist/keyboardist Elliot Jackson), resulting in the lineup for 2012's History Speaks, their full-length debut. After touring behind it, the group reconvened to produce this month's Always Waiting EP, and are currently working on their second studio album. Always Waiting finds the band progressing as songwriters in four different tangents, ranging from stark, solo guitar pieces ("All Chalked Up") to piano-led ballads ("Juno Song"). "One By One" is one of the group's most electronic-leaning tracks to date, but also one of their most rewarding. Bursting with a bubbling mix of programmed and acoustic percussion, Dobson's guitar and voice soar into the foreground in the song's chorus. Using the studio as a fifth member, Deep Sea Diver balance their more melodic and textural tendencies on "One By One", but remain as engaging as ever.
Save for a date supporting Built to Spill in Portland on September 27th, Deep Sea Diver don't have any tour dates announced yet. (Presumably, they'll tour in the new year after LP2 is finished.) Keep up with the band on their website and Facebook, and below, watch the band play "NWO" live on KEXP in 2012:
