"Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?" asks Goodbye Heart on their Facebook page, quoting the song Tina Turner made famous. It's an interesting band mantra for local duo of Sam Ford and Nila K. Leigh, both transplanted from NYC. Surely, it's not an admission that there is no heart in their music, but instead a recognition that, in their songs, absence and heartache play a huge role.
Not yet two years old, their project is new to the Seattle scene, but they've already made a splash. Their 2014 five-song EP features the single "Just Kids", a mixture of 808-style drums and 80's sythns and guitars. Duel complimentary vocals spill out over moody, melancholic music, filling listeners' ears with a sort of sad curiosity. Someone is crying in a window, we can only imagine. What is going on? Then the swells of the song hit us, filling our cores, washing away dejection. Then, just like that, "Just Kids" leaves us.
Goodbye Heart will be playing at Lo-Fi performance gallery on Eastlake on April 3. You can buy tickets here. They'll be live on KEXP a couple weeks later, on Friday, April 18, at 1PM.
