Review Revue: 10 Years After the Goldrush

I often have very little to go on with the more obscure releases I cover on this blog series, but there's almost no info out there on Constrictor Records and their 10 Years after the Goldrush compilation - at least in English (and my high school German is not enough to help me out on wikipedia.de). It seems Constrictor was founded in the '80s by German musicians Phillip Boa and Pia Lund, both members of Phillip Boa and the Voodooclub, which is still a going concern, unlike the label they started.

There are a lot of bands you've probably never heard of on this collection, although the names The Wedding Present and T.V. Personalities will likely pop out to most KEXP types. But Hangman's Beautiful Daughters? 1000 Violins? Inca Babies? Never heard of 'em, but color me intrigued. (Oh look, here's HBD's debut EP on youtube! With a comment by the singer! Man, the Internet is so cool sometimes.) It's good to see that Inca Babies and Christian Hound had at least one champion here at KCMU.

"This a superb compilation. You'll see."

"I'm fascinated by the lack of comments on this excellent record."

"I'm glad you are."

"Well. Good. Wow. Uh-um. A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. Hello. Good night. Bye now. Is this on? Are we on? Happy now?

"That's true Art but 1 hand in a bird ain't near worth two hands in a bush."

"1 big mind!"

"I think this is great."

"Try Inca Babies, Christian Hound, just for starters."

"Or, for that matter, the TV Personalities track."

When People Were Shorter and Lived Near the Water is one of those bands whose name I've noticed (how could you not?) and admired for decades, but I don't believe I've ever heard them until just no…
