Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Back Again” by My Goodness from the forthcoming self-released album SHIVER + SHAKE.

My Goodness - Back Again (MP3)

Influenced by local punk and grunge bands, Seattle's My Goodness began as a project of guitarist and vocalist Joel Schneider. Previously accompanied by drummer Ethan Jacobson, Joel's meticulous yet unrestrained style was amplified when Andy Lum joined him on drums in 2011. Together, the duo have successfully embraced a straightforward approach to blues rock without imitating well known artists of the genre like The Black Keys or Gary Clark Jr.. With their Pacific Northwest roots, My Goodness brings a touch of Seattle bands like Nirvana and The Blood Brothers into the mix. My Goodness has already won the heart of Washington, and their upcoming album, SHIVER + SHAKE, will surely catapult them onto the national stage. The new album differs from their self-titled debut not only in regard to the lineup but also in that the band takes the time to experiment with their musical capabilities. The results are already clear in the three tracks that are available off the new album, including today's featured song, "Back Again." The new material adds a crisper and more calculated layer to the gutsy conviction of the band. "Back Again" has Schneider singing at the top of his lungs and thrashing on the guitar with Lum smashing the drums in a revenge-y anthem. Rather than an uncoordinated wall of sound, the track communicates My Goodness' musical strength and savvy, leaving the listener head-banging and attempting to sing along to the sometimes unintelligible lyrics.

My Goodness will be performing at Waterfront Park in Seattle for the Out to Lunch Summer Concert Series on August 23rd, at Hops and Crops in Auburn with The Maldives on September 14 and at Red Hook Brewery in Woodinville with Beat Connection on the same day. Stay up to date with the latest from My Goodness on their website and Facebook page.
