Song of the Day: Bass Drum of Death - Shattered Me

John Barrett’s Bass Drum of Death project is set to grow this year with the help of an excellent new self-titled record on Innovative Leisure. Bass Drum of Death marks Barrett’s second LP as the one man garage powerhouse. His first, GB City was a great introduction and a sharp blend of lo-fi melodies, but his 2013 release sees him coming into his own with some serious songwriting chops and a more historical look at Barrett’s genre. We liked it, and you probably will too.

“Shattered Me” is just about as good as it gets on Bass Drum of Death. Starting with a machine gun snare and a murderous guitar hook, “Shattered Me” kicks into a signature Barrett cut. He hides a great production mix and balance under a shrill lo-fi treble to keep in garage vogue, but really, this track is pure, summery, indie pop magic. The track moves seamlessly between a pure joy verse and a hook with some justification of reckless abandon. “If I get struck down, I don’t know where I’d rather be”, Barrett sings, as the guitars buzz and the drums pound away. “Shattered Me” is a cry of independence and love, but also a rally for embracing the moment. After two short and sweet minutes, the tune is over, but not without leaving your mouth watering for more. It’s the perfect introduction to the record and a great track to repeat over and over again on summer playlists.
