Today’s song, selected by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is “Glaciers” by Seattle band The Trouble Starts from the 2013 self-released album EAST.

The band, led by Daniel G. Harmann and featuring Aaron Starkey, Kennith J. Darling and Shea Bliss, walks the line between musical pondering and physicality. Their forthcoming album, EAST, demands fast reactions, as if a professional sporting event, the listener’s head always on a swivel, looking out for the next move, yet the senses always appreciating the beauty of the performance. Today's featured song, “Glaciers”, crystalizes this feeling - we are transported to the field of play: running, swerving, ready for achievement as the clock ticks down.
“Glaciers” opens with a guitar solo – how brave! But considering lead guitarist Starkey's ability to jam, so it’s no wonder. The tune, reminiscent of Pixies’ “Monkey Gone To Heaven”, complete with complimentary backing vocals that recall Modest Mouse or even The Presidents of the United States, is a true product of the Pacific Northwest. The album was mixed in Vancouver, WA, and tracked and mastered in Seattle. “Glaciers”, the (ironically fast-moving) first single for the new LP, feels like a race at dusk – lights staring down, a peculiar, frantic hope in the runner's eyes looking up. With heavy bass tones and crashing symbols, the song sticks in the mind. Melts, even.
The Trouble Starts will celebrate the release of their new album, East, Friday, August 16th, at the Columbia City Theater (the album is available August 13th). The show will include performances by Kladruby Gold and Keaton Collective and tickets can be found here.
