Song of the Day: Big Eyes - Nothing You Could Say

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. Big Eyes have been rocking the Seattle scene for a couple years now. Since their first demos back in 2010, the band has brought a great punk presence to keep up with Kate Eldridge's great songwriting technique. Big Eyes isn't her maiden voyage on the indie scene. In fact, Eldridge played in P.S. Eliot with the Crutchfields, who now operate as Waxahatchee and Swearin'. Before that, she played in Brooklyn band Cheeky with Brian Schleyer, now in The Babies. Eldridge's newest act is her most refined and most digestible. Big Eyes write strong, punk-induced tunes that match personality to prowess quite well.

"Nothing You Could Say" is the lead track off of the new Big Eyes LP, Almost Famous, out last month on Grave Mistake. Almost Famous is a really good record, filled with fun hooks and DIY grit on tracks like "Wanted Sometimes" and "Being Unkind". But "Nothing You Could Say" kicks things off with a straightforward and unfaltering bang. The track is a vintage rock jam, showcasing some really excellent counterpoint between the guitar and bass lines. Eldridge's vocals are confident and determined. As she documents a breakup between two lovers who have lost their chemistry and any semblance of continuity, the anger in her voice shows a stoic poise. The track is driving and the structure is clean cut, giving the record an excellent push off to set sail. Altogether, "Nothing You Could Say" gives Almost Famous a great start and makes for a fine addition to our Song of the Day Podcast.

Big Eyes are currently touring the East Coast, but they'll be back in Seattle on July 1 at Black Lodge and then on July 8 at El Corazon.
