Wasn't I just talking about my childhood love of The Charlatans UK? Indeed I was. So it seemed like a fine time to take a moment to check out the debut album from these lovable Mancunians - who, it must be said, are still going strong, having released their 11th studio album in 2010 and rumored to be working on the 12th this year.

This groovy British pop sound, rounded out with heaping doses of Hammond organ and Manc-accented, somewhat disaffected vocals, was a revelation to me back in 1990. Of course, not having been a college DJ through the '80s, I didn't have the perspective that some of our friends at KCMU might have had. It's nice to see that even these inveterate music snobs found something to enjoy here.

"Some of this is straight ahead British pop while some of it has that Manchester dance sound. Either way satisfying stuff."

"When 'The Only One I Know' was in the singles bin someone requested it every week."

"I loved the single, but had some reservations about their ability to sustain an entire album. By switching off between dancier numbers and more jangly pop songs they've shown themselves to be up to the task. Splendid."

"Also on disc."

"Get down, get funky and let's all freak out once again. It smacks you in the face and gets your feet a-dancin'!!"

"Depite all the hype... this really is a good & enjoyable pop LP."

Actually, I think those super-awkward scenes with Dave Mustaine in Some Kind of Monster pretty much sum up the entirety of my Megadeth knowl…

Before that moniker referred to a sublimely terrible movie by Tommy Wiseau, it was a short-lived but relatively pr…
