Song of the Day: The Carousels - Marianne

Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Marianne” by The Carousels from the 2012 album Sweet Northern Light on Northern Star Records.

Formed in Keith, Scotland in 2010, The Carousels create folk pop music indebted to the late '60s outfitted with lush modern production. Despite operating more like a collective than a band (multiple band members "drop in and out whenever suits", according to the band), the songs on their debut album Sweet Northern Light carry a bright, cohesive sound all the way through the album's eight tracks. "Marianne's" bright tone carries on the hallmarks of the late '60s folk pop movement. With jangling Roger McGuinn-guitars and glowing Crosby-style harmonies delivering the story of the titular woman, it's an brightly updated take on The Notorious Byrd Brothers akin to what Tame Impala did with '60s psych rock on last year's Lonerism.
