Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Every Friday we spotlight a Northwest artist. Today’s selection, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, comes from Seattle band The Hoot Hoots. "Go For A Walk" comes from their November EP release Feel The Cosmos.
The Hoot Hoots - Go For A Walk (MP3)
The Hoot Hoots have been rising on the Seattle scene since late 2008. Since 2010, they've been dropping records like mad and keeping all keen enough to listen quite busy with their ever-expanding catalogue. For the most part, they play insanely upbeat power pop and sing about robots and dinosaurs. But the Hoot Hoots are no joke band, nor are they to be taken lightly. Adam and Chris Prairie have developed some serious pop songwriting chops over the years, and to top it off, they've figured out how to capture the awesome energy of their records in the live setting. Even now in the band's early stages, we are seeing some seriously promising omens of success from the Hoot Hoots, and their newest release, Feel The Cosmos, is of course no exception.
"Go For A Walk" is the opener to Feel The Cosmos and man alive is it a good time. Within 30 seconds, you'll hear decades of pop zingers all piled on top of each other. Beach Boys style vocal doubling, a simple, driving 70s bass and drum groove, over the top 80s synthesizers, and fuzzy, whimsical, indie rock guitars - they are all there with more to boot. Adam's vocals are dripping with confidence, the band is as tight as can be, and the melody is catchier than anything you'll hear on pop radio. Also, if you aren't really into dinosaurs or the X-files, this tune is a bit more subtle, lyrically - more of a live shout along than a tongue-in-cheek chuckle. Altogether, it's a brilliant pop tune and nothing you should skip out on.
"Go For A Walk" is available above! Check out the Hoot Hoots Bandcamp page for more music and physical copies of Feel The Cosmos. The Hoot Hoots are playing at the Tractor Tavern on January 24 and the Comet Tavern on February 16. Check out their website for more local dates! If you want to see what you'd be missing if you didn't catch them at the Tractor or the Comet, check out the video below from a show early last year. Fun, right?
